Blessings, Not Burdens

We have an election coming up in Alabama tomorrow to select a new Senator, and it is full of controversy and debate.  Politics is one thing I never lose an ounce of sleep over because Romans 13:1 tells us that God is in control.  However, the argument I have seen supporting the abortion of babies who may have a disability or a shortened life expectancy is one that I cannot ignore.

I try to stay clear of negativity in general.  It is sad to watch people verbally attack each other.  The truth is, we are aiming our weapons at the wrong enemy.  Ephesians 6:12 tells us that “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood… but against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

One of the weapons that Satan uses is fear.  Fear mixed with half-truths.  And he somehow angles it to make it look noble.  After all, “if he did live, what kind of life would he have anyway?”  And “we don’t want him to be a burden on the family.”

Families who are contemplating adoption are also attacked.  Sometimes from concerned loved ones pointing out that they don’t want your lives to become “too hard” or that “she may live with you forever, you know.”

After the initial hurt of these comments, I have had to learn to redirect my anger away from the people who said them and toward the true source.

John 8:44 “…He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Who decided that if a person is born different in some way that it is a negative thing?  The truth is, every one of us is flawed.  Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Through our experience and the experiences of many other similar families, I know for sure that every child is precious and deserves to live out the purpose that he/she was created to do.  Which is ultimately to bring glory to God.  I have met several women who chose to give birth to their babies, fully understanding that they would likely only live a few hours.  What a blessing those hours were, and what a testimony those families now have.

This blog post actually has nothing to do with an election.  It is simply an encouragement for us all to look for the good in each other and to guard against lies based in fear when making life decisions.

2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

From our perspective, the result of pushing past our fears has been abundant blessings that we could have never seen coming!
