Jian got a tent for Christmas this past year. She has been very excited for several months planning her first camping trip. We decided to go over the weekend before it got too hot during summer. At first, I tried to sell her on just setting a tent up in our back yard and walking down to the neighborhood park to build a fire and roast marshmallows. But that idea didn’t go over too well. So we went all out: I rented a Jeep Wrangler to add to the experience, we packed up our tent, air mattress, sleeping bags, cooler full of camp food and went to a local state park.
Our first project was to set up the tent. The directions stated that it could be done in 1 minute. It took us just under 3 hours. Next, we didn’t have a way to use our pump to blow up our queen sized air mattress. So Jian and I used our lungs to blow it about half way up. Then a nice person who had electricity at her campsite said we could use it to finish up. By the time we got ready to build our fire, it was getting dark. Next time we will know to bring more lighting and to cook our food before it gets dark. Luckily, a friend heard that we were going camping and gave Jian a light to wear around her forehead. That saved us! Also, as we were packing the car, I mentioned needing to take some chairs, but the rest of my group did not think that was necessary. So we didn’t have anywhere to sit the whole time.
When we got ready to sleep, a person nearby was singing and playing his guitar into the wee hours of the morning. I actually really enjoyed it. It was nice to get away, be in the woods, and listen to the nearby stream. Jian loved it and can’t wait to go back. Hopefully I will remember the insect repellant next time…
