Yesterday we left Jian’s province. It was her first time on an airplane. She sweetly told our guide goodbye. She was excited and totally fine. I was choking back tears at the thought that my sweet girl was leaving the place she has always lived rarely to return. I’m not sure she yet understands the heaviness of this. We boarded the plane and had to sit on the runway for 2 hours before taking off. Not sure why, but the passengers who spoke Mandarin were voicing their displeasure. Jian played and colored nicely. She had never seen a seatbelt before. I showed her once how to use it. Before taking off, she had pure delight and excitement in her eyes watching the other planes. We told her to buckle her seatbelt. She obeyed but let out the slack so she could have enough room to scoot over and see out the window. She is starting to feel comfortable enough to test some boundaries. She was again amazed by flying through the clouds. She eventually fell asleep. In my Bikram yoga classes there is a pose nicknamed the Japanese Ham Sandwich where your body bends forward and touches your legs with no space in between. She feel comfortably asleep in this position on the plane. I will probably work my whole life and never accomplish this pose!
